Two nights ago we went and saw Blade Runner 2049 in IMAX. Let me start by saying I still love Blade Runner more, but this was an amazing experience nonetheless. Terrific visuals, great performance, good storytelling, and a nice sequel to the first Blade Runner story. Still left a few crumbles telling us to expect the third part.

On the minus side, I bumped into a couple of plot holes, but not something major. Not something that would ruin the overall story. I feel that one of them it may have been left there on purpose, although I liked more the smoother ways Blade Runner did the same on a similar purpose. Don’t want to give examples and explain so as not to give away the story for those who haven’t seen it yet.

I especially loved the twist that now we’re not only talking about the potential humanity of replicants and their reasons for freedom and human rights but about the same thing for the holographic household companions, practically just a software. And the one thing defining them all as worthy of freedom and rights is one of the most important aspects that makes us humans—empathy.

“Just a software” and yet the companion felt so humane that I heard frustrated opinions after the movie that here’s another misogynistic movie, showing women just as bi-dimensional companions to males and seen through beings (the companions were holograms, so light went through and we could discern what was on the other side of their projections), no consistency. And that only tells me that the movie has done its job and has struck that deep cord it had aimed for.

All in all a worthy experience. And please do see it first in cinema and if possible in IMAX.
