GIRLS ON FILM – Episode 5

In the ‘70s and ‘80s Romania had two TV stations, TVR1 and TVR2, both run by the Government. TVR 1 broadcasted daily from 5PM to 11PM and from 8AM to 12AM on Saturdays and Sundays. TVR2’s schedule was even shorter.
Obviously, most of it was news: political, economical, agricultural and industrial reports, Romanians were kept abreast of Ceausescu’s travels and inspections throughout the country and treated to wonderfully long broadcasts on the Communist Party Congresses.

We did have comics in Romania. Not the American kind, not the Franco-Belgian bande dessinee kind. We had children comics with a series of local heroes and stories. Some of them were absolutely adorable. We also had adult comics with historical stories. Stories about Vlad the Impaler for instance.

By 1978 I was so hooked on books that three things happened:
First, I went on a tour of all the central public libraries in Bucuresti.
Second, I began looking for books in my relatives’ libraries.
And third, I bribed my way into several bookstores, wishing to be the first one to know when a new genre book hits the shelves.
You need to understand another aspect of the communist years. Everything was in high demand and short supply. Books and magazines, garments and shoes, food, holidays, everything.
