Julie Czerneda is an established household name in the Science Fiction genre. She is one of the Science Fiction Masters. And as if that was not enough, with “A Turn of Light” she has also become one of the bright new names in the Fantasy genre. “A Turn of Light” is the first book in a trilogy, of which we’re eagerly waiting for the third book. Now, I already talked about the first one here.

It is very rare when you can say about a sequel that it is as good as the first book, the original. Well, “A Play of Shadow” is at least as good as “A Turn of Light”. I’d even say that for me it was better. If I praised the brilliant ideas and world building for the first one, “A Play of Shadow” leaves the first book in a trail of dust concerning ideas and world building. Maybe because I love weird stuff and “A Play of Shadow” has plenty of it. And the same mastery of words and dialogue makes its story as gripping as the first.

I have no doubt that in the near future we’ll see these two books as study material for writing students. Especially in world building classes. We’ll doubtlessly see Julie Czerneda’s portrait next to the Fantasy Grand Masters’. And if not, I will personally start a revolution to set things right.
